Ferris State University has announced the appointment of McKenzie Shelby to the Bulldogs' sports medicine and athletic training staff. The announcement was made by FSU Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine Brett Knight.

Shelby, who recently began her duties at FSU, will provide direct coverage for Ferris State's NCAA Division I men's ice hockey program while also assisting with other varsity programs and initiatives. She replaces former associate athletic trainer Brady Hopkins, who departed for another career opportunity late this past season.

Prior to her arrival at Ferris State, Shelby most recently served as an athletic trainer since 2021 at the University of Minnesota-Crookston where she worked directly with the school's NCAA Division II volleyball, softball and tennis teams in addition to serving as the point person for the institution's club men's ice hockey team.

"We're thrilled to land such an experienced individual and believe she'll be a great addition to our staff," said Knight. "McKenzie brings the skills and background to step into a key role quickly and will provide exceptional care and support to our student-athletes."

While at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, Shelby provided direct management and care for musculoskeletal injuries, concussions and general medical conditions for her assigned teams. She also created and implemented rehabilitation programs for injury prevention and management along with integrated modalities and soft tissue work into treatment plans. Additionally, she built professional relationships with local physicians and referred athletes for further evaluation as needed.

Before landing in Crookston, Shelby completed an internship at her alma mater, Northern Michigan University, in 2020-21. She worked with the Wildcats' men's ice hockey and women's volleyball teams during the stint, helping treat injuries while also creating and monitoring rehabilitation programs. She covered practices and home events while aiding in the direct and immediate care of student-athletes as needed.

Shelby earned both a bachelor of science and a master of science degree from NMU. She gained hands-on clinical experience at Northern Michigan through rotations with men's ice hockey, volleyball, golf, wrestling, Olympic weightlifting, women's soccer and cross country along with track and field squads during her time in Marquette.

A certified athletic trainer, Shelby is also CPR/AED certified thru the American Red Cross and has completed other certification and training requirements.
