Ferris State Stays Unbeaten With Road Triumph Inside The Superior Dome

Marquette, Mich. - The nationally 6th-ranked Ferris State University football team stayed perfect on the year and improved to 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with 35-19 victory over the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday (Sept. 22) at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

Offensively, the Bulldogs racked up 535 yards of total offense with 356 yards on the ground while holding the Wildcats to 294 yards of total offense and just 117 on the ground.

Ferris State junior quarterback Jayru Campbell had his second five-touchdown outing as a Bulldog with three through the air in the first half, adding two on the ground in the second half. Campbell also had a career-high 168 yards rushing on 22 attempts while going 12-20 for 179 yards through the air.

Ferris State struck first with 8:09 to play in the opening quarter when Jayru Campbell hit redshirt freshman receiver Sy Barnett on a back shoulder toss into the endzone for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added to the lead five minutes later when Campbell hit junior slot Jevon Shaw on an identical fade for a 14-0 edge.

The Wildcats answered with a 40-yard field goal 2:54 into the second from from Daniel Riser to cut the Bulldog lead to 14-3.

On the following drive, Barnett picked up his second receiving touchdown of the day from Campbell on a 28-yard touchdown toss to increase the margin to 21-3.

Late in the opening half, NMU pulled back within 11 when Jake Mayon made a two-yard dash for the endzone to put the Bulldog halftime lead at 21-10.

Out of the halftime break, the Bulldogs asserted the run game and scored 2:58 into the third quarter on a three-yard QB keeper by Jayru Campbell who put FSU on top 28-10.

After a stout defensive stand, the Bulldogs boasted good field position and called on Campbell again on the keeper for a five-yard rushing touchdown for a 35-10 lead.

On the ensuing drive, the Wildcats ran it down inside the Bulldog three-yard line but the Bulldogs finally cracked, when NMU had five straight attempts in the shadow of the goal line after a stream of penalties to pull within 20 points of the Bulldogs. The Wildcats went for two, but were held short by the Bulldogs.

After holding Ferris State to a three-and-out, Northern Michigan hit on a 28-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Riser to make it 35-19 in favor of FSU with 9:56 to play in the fourth quarter to cap the game scoring.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were able to get to the quarterback six times for sacks, with junior defensive end Austin Edwards leading the defense with eight tackles and four for a loss for a total of nine yards including two sacks.

Ferris State sophomore running back Marvin Campbell added 91 yards on the ground on 13 carries while the Bulldogs used four receivers to spread the ball around. Senior receiver Keyondre Craig had 83 yards on three receptions while Barnett picked up two touchdowns on two receptions for 34 yards.

The Bulldogs return home to take on the Ashland Eagles for homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Top Taggart Field. The Division II Showcase National Game of the Week will be televsied live by ESPN3 starting at 3:05 p.m. (ET).
