#2 Ferris State Opens Homestand With Victory Over Northwood At Top Taggart Field

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University football squad, ranked second in the country, opened a two-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) homestand with a 44-17 triumph over visiting Northwood on Saturday (Oct. 19) at Top Taggart Field.

The Bulldogs tallied 484 yards of total offense, including 221 yards on the ground en route to the win to move to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC this year.

NU struck first as the Timberwolves took an early 7-0 lead only four minutes into the contest on Jalen Lewis' one-yard carry to finish an eight-play, 75-yard jaunt.

However, Ferris State came back to notch the next three scores in building a 21-7 lead. FSU drove 65 yards in 11 plays with junior tailback Marvin Campbell scoring from one-yard away to knot the game with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, FSU followed it up with two additional scores. Campbell earned his second TD of the contest on a four-yard scoring run with 9:26 left in the half to finish FSU's 46-yard march. Later, with 5:47 to go in the half, senior quarterback Jayru Campbell hooked up with sophomore wideout Sy Barnett on a 76-yard scoring throw to push the lead to two scores.

NU managed to cut the margin to 21-10 at halftime as Parker Blust converted a 20-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

The Bulldogs, though, drove 75 yards in seven plays to start the third quarter with senior slot Jevon Shaw scoring on a two-yard run to make it 28-10. From there, the lead grew to 31-10 as Jackson Dieterle converted a 24-yard field goal with 7:34 left in the third.

Northwood produced its second touchdown of the contest near the end of the third period when quarterback Nate Gomez reached the endzone on a 12-yard carry to cap an eight-play, 40-yard NU drive.

The Bulldogs answered with two fourth quarter scores to put the game away once and for all. Tailback Tyler Minor scored with 9:49 left on a 55-yard TD run before slot Caleb Walker scored his first collegiate touchdown with 2:07 to play on a 19-yard scoring run.

For Ferris State, Minor ran for a team-high 64 yards on five carries while sophomore QB Evan Cummins had 46 rushing yards on six attempts. Jayru Campbell threw for 239 yards on eight-of-17 passing with Barnett making four catches for 132 yards. Shaw had two grabs for 58 yards.

Lewis led NU on the ground with 82 yards rushing as the Timberwolves totaled 215 yards with 120 rushing overall.

Senior Najeem Hosein led the FSU defense with nine tackles while senior end Austin Edwards had eigth stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

The Bulldogs will host Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 1 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids. It will be Football Alumni Day with FSU welcoming back former players and staff for the outing against the Cardinals.
