Two Transfers Join FSU Men's Basketball

Big Rapids, Mich. - Two transfer players are the latest additions to the Ferris State University men's basketball recruiting class, according to an announcement made today by FSU head coach Bill Sall.

Michigan natives Brandyn Mungo (Westland/Detroit Renaissance) and Kenny Brown (Farmington Hills/Harrison) will join the Bulldogs for the 2010-11 season after playing their initial collegiate campaigns at out-of-state NCAA Division II schools.  Both will be sophomores this coming season at the wing position and have three years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-2 Brown spent the 2009-10 season at Augustana (S.D.), a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), while the 6-5 Mungo spent his first season at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member Clarion (Pa.).

"We're excited about adding both of these guys," Sall said.  "They'll help provide us with nice depth at the guard position, especially after graduating three seniors at that spot this past year."

In 2009-10, Brown appeared in 31 games as Augustana posted a school best 24-7 overall record and reached the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championship Game. The Vikings also recorded a third-place (15-5) finish among 14 teams in the NSIC under head coach Tom Billeter.

"Kenny is a combo guard with nice offensive skills and shoots well," said Sall.  "He had an outstanding high school career in Michigan and received some quality playing time on a good team at the college level this past year."

As a collegiate freshman, Brown averaged 5.9 points per contest with 183 total points to go with 35 rebounds, 19 assists and 16 steals.  He shot 34.6% (28-81) from the three-point arc and was a 70% (45-64) free throw shooter.  Brown finished as Augustana's sixth-leading scorer and totaled five double-figure scoring performances, including a season-high 17 points in two of his first three games of the campaign.

A former two-year prep starter at Farmington Hills Harrison High School, Brown averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game as a prep senior in 2008-09. He led the entire state of Michigan in scoring his final year and set two school scoring records, including career scoring and single-game scoring (42), while serving as team captain. Brown led the Hawks to an 11-10 record in his senior season, which marked the best record in school history. He was a two-time first team all-state selection.

As a prep junior, Brown contributed 19.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Also a two-year starter in football, Brown recorded 26 catches for 384 yards and three touchdowns as a senior, earning all-area honors.

Meanwhile, Mungo saw action in 23 games this past year for Clarion, which finished with an 18-11 overall record and a 9-5 league mark en route to the PSAC Tournament Semifinals.  He totaled 122 points, 27 rebounds, 15 assists and 10 steals while averaging 5.3 points per contest.  Mungo shot 42.2% (46-109) from the field and was 16-of-49 (.327) beyond the arc under head coach Ron Righter. His totals featured five double-figure scoring contests with a personal season-high and game-best 22 points in his initial collegiate action versus Penn State-New Kensington (Nov. 17).

"Brandyn was able to earn some significant playing time as a freshman at Clarion," Sall said.  "His presence will help shore up our depth on the wing and give us another viable option at the position."

Mungo averaged 14 points and six rebounds per contest as a prep senior in 2008-09 at Detroit Renaissance where he teamed with current FSU forward Daniel Sutherlin (Detroit/Renaissance), who completed his freshman season with the Bulldogs this past year and will also be a sophomore in eligibility during the 2010-11 campaign.

As a prepster, Mungo was an honorable mention All-Detroit honoree and ranked as the ninth-best senior wing in Michigan by bankhoops.com.  He helped Renaissance to a 17-6 overall record his final prep campaign in the competitive Detroit Public School League.

Brown and Mungo join a recruiting class that includes two incoming high school products who committed earlier in guard DeMarco Sanders (Flint/Powers) and forward Tyler Dwyer (Saginaw/Arthur Hill).

Ferris State concluded the 2009-10 men's basketball campaign with a 16-13 overall record and the Bulldogs placed tied for second (13-9) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division play. In addition, FSU made its 11th GLIAC Tournament appearance this campaign, which was the program's fifth berth in the last six years.

The Bulldogs have claimed two GLIAC North Division Championships and made two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances under Sall's direction, including a trip to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05.

Ferris officially opens preseason drills for the 2010-11 season on Oct. 15.
