This Week: The Ferris State University men's basketball team will play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this week. FSU hosts Wayne State on Thursday (Feb. 20) inside Jim Wink Arena at 8 p.m. (ET) before traveling to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 22) for a league matchup beginning at 7 p.m. (ET). Three of FSU's four remaining regular-season games are at home.
Media Coverage: Thursday's game will be broadcast locally by Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network starting with the Meijer Pregame Show a half-hour prior to the women's tipoff. Rob Bentley and Sandy Gholston will call the action. In addition, a live audio broadcast will be accessible along with a pay-per-view video webcast along with live internet statistics. Last Time Out: The Bulldogs battled back from a 17-point second half deficit and nearly pulled off an improbable comeback in a close 89-86 setback to nationally 20th-ranked Lake Superior State last Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Lakers, who lead the GLIAC and are among the region's top teams, built a 43-29 halftime lead and the edge grew to 17 points early in the second period, but Ferris State rallied back and eventually pulled back within two points on a layup from sophomore forward Josh Fleming with less than 20 seconds to play. However, with just under 14 seconds to go, the Bulldogs were called for an intentional foul and Lake Superior State hit four free throws the rest of the way to secure the win.
Thursday Home Events: Thursday night's doubleheader will represent "Faculty Apprecation Day" as the Bulldogs honor campus faculty members. In addition, a special promotion for all Ferris State University students will also take place as part of "RSO Appreciation Day". Each registered student organization on campus with a minimum of 15 people present will be eligible to win up to $300 for their group.
Rescheduled Date: A rescheduled date has been officially announced for the Bulldogs' GLIAC home doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State. The two teams will now meet in the regular-season finale on Saturday, March 1, with the men's game set for a 3 p.m. (ET) start. The two teams were slated to face each other on Feb. 1, but the contest was postponed due to an incident near the Ferris State campus.
First-Year Coach: First-year FSU head coach Andy Bronkema was elevated to the head coaching position in July after six years as an assistant coach under former Bulldog head coach Bill Sall, who is now the head coach at fellow GLIAC member Northern Michigan.
The Records: Ferris State (7-15, 6-12 GLIAC) posted a 74-65 league win over Northern Michigan in its most recent home game on Feb. 8 before going on the road last week and coming out on the short end in two games. FSU fell to Northwood 81-65 on Thursday (Feb. 13) prior to a 89-86 loss on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 20th-ranked Lake Superior State.
Wayne State (11-11, 9-10 GLIAC) has dropped four of its last five games to date and fell twice last week in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Warriors lost to Michigan Tech 63-55 on Thursday (Feb. 13) in Houghton and then fell to Northern Michigan 74-66 on Saturday (Feb. 15) in Marquette.
Saginaw Valley State (9-13, 5-13 GLIAC) has won two of its last three games overall this year. The Cardinals beat Northern Michigan 61-50 last Thursday (Feb. 13) in Marquette before falling 68-53 at Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 15). SVSU visits Grand Valley State on Thursday this week before facing the Bulldogs.
The Head Coach: Ferris State – Andy Bronkema (Cornerstone), 1st season, 7-15 (.350) - (0-1 vs. WSU, 0-0 vs. SVSU). Bronkema takes over the Bulldog program this season following six years as an assistant coach, including the last three as the program's top assistant. A collegiate standout at NAIA Division II Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich., Bronkema was voted All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) three times and twice garnered NAIA Honorable Mention All-America laurels. He was a multi-sport prep standout at McBain (Mich.) High School.
Last year: Last season, with Bronkema as the Bulldogs' top assistant, Ferris State wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 14-13 overall record and the Bulldogs reached the GLIAC Postseason Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years, which ranks as one of the conference's top showings over the past decade.
Series History: The Bulldogs hold a 40-39 series' edge over Wayne State, but have dropped 16 of the last 23 series' games to date., including a 79-62 decision earlier this year (Jan. 30) in the Motor City. FSU won two of three meetings against the Warriors in 2010-11, which included a 90-88 win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament (3/12/11) at Louisville, Ky. Ferris had notched its first win over Wayne State in the Motor City since 1994-95 with a 54-52 victory in its trip to Detroit four years ago (1/21/10). The Bulldogs snapped a nine-game series' losing streak with a 70-65 home triumph in 2006 (2/16), which was the squad's first win over WSU since 1996-97. A year ago, the two teams split two classics with FSU winning 72-68 in overtime at home (1/24) and the Warriors pulling out a 56-53 victory in Detroit (2/21) ...... Ferris maintains a 52-35 lead heading into Saturday's 88th series meeting with SVSU. The Bulldogs have won 16 of the last 25 series' encounters overall and topped the Cardinals three times in 2010-11 before splitting two games each of the last two years. In 2012-13, the Bulldogs prevailed 50-47 in University Center (1/26) before the Cardinals earned a 75-67 win in Big Rapids (2/23).
Looking At Wayne State: Wayne State heads into Thursday's meeting in Big Rapids with a 11-11 overall record and is 9-10 in league play after falling at Northern Michigan 74-66 last Saturday (Feb. 15). The Warriors have developed into one of the league's top annual contenders under the guidance of 13th-year head coach David Greer, who has led WSU to the NCAA Tournament four times. A veteran Wayne State lineup is paced by senior guard Bryan Coleman (16.3 ppg.), who is one of three players currently in double-digits. The Warriors are only 3-8 in road games to date this year.
Looking At SVSU: The Cardinals will visit Grand Valley State on Thursday prior to facing the Bulldogs. SVSU holds a 9-13 overall record and is 5-13 in league play to date. Six of SVSU's nine wins have come at home. The Cardinals are coming off a road split at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech last weekend and have won two of their last three games overall. Second-year head coach Randy Baruth's squad is led by freshman forward C.J. Turnage (15.9 ppg.), who's one of three players currently averaging in double-digits.
