Two Bulldog Seniors Selected For Champions Of Character College All-Star Game
Big Rapids, Mich. - A pair of recent Ferris State University basketball standouts have been chosen to participate and will compete in the 2014 Champions of Character College All-Star Game, which will be played on Wednesday (March 26) night in Grand Rapids.
Senior guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) will compete in the women's game while senior forward Raymoan McAfee (Detroit/Pershing) will take part in the men's contest. Both recently wrapped up their collegiate careers for the Bulldogs during the 2013-14 season.
Davenport University will serve as the host of the 2014 Champions of Character College All-Star Games on Wednesday at the DU Student Center. The games will take play at 6 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
The eighth annual event will be hosted by Davenport for the first time and is being spearheaded by DU faculty member Steven Prawdzik. All of the players were selected via a live chat on MLive.com.
ESPN 96.1 FM in Grand Rapids will have the men's game live on the radio while Davenport Sports Information will provide live stats and live video on the Davenport Athletics Network with Aaron Sagraves on the play by play call.
Tickets are $5 per person or $15 for families, with money raised going to the "Champions of Character Lecturing Initiative." A goal to raise between $5,000 and $7,500 has been set by the sports marketing departments at Davenport and Cornerstone to help the initiative that promotes respect, integrity, responsibility, leadership and sportsmanship to every player, coach, referee, parent and spectator at area schools.
DeShone recently became the first three-time All-America in Bulldog women's basketball history. A four-year letterwinner, DeShone wrapped up her career ranked among the school's top all-time leaders in a number of statistical categories including second in three-point percentage (.397), third in made three's (166), sixth in free throws made (269), sixth in assists (379), eighth in scoring (1,419) and 11th in steals (154).
This season, DeShone ranked third among the conference's scoring leaders (17.8 ppg.), third in assists (4.7 pg.) and was seventh in three-point percentage (.410) along with seventh in three-pointers made (2.1 pg.) and sixth in steals (1.8 pg.). She also led the conference and ranked in the top 10 nationally in free throw percentage (.916).
Meanwhile, McAfee was a two-year letterwinner for the Bulldog men's squad after originally beginning his collegiate career on the NCAA Division I level at Bethune-Cookman. He averaged more than six points and four rebounds per game in his final campaign. The Detroit Pershing product reached double-figure scoring in four of his final seven collegiate contests and played in 24 games this past season for the Bulldogs.
A total of 24 student-athletes will compete in the men's contest with McAfee competing for Team 2. Players in the men's game will represent FSU, Aquinas, Cornerstone, Davenport, Grace Bible, Grand Valley State, Detroit, Alma, Concordia, Hope, Lake Superior State and Madonna. All either played collegiate or prep basketball in the West Michigan area.
On the women's side, DeShone will also play for Team 2. The women's rosters include participation from FSU, Olivet, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Dordt, Hope, Aquinas, Cornerstone, Davenport and Grand Valley State.
Overall, only a total of three players from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will compete on the men's side with two on the women's side.
