Ferris State Men's Basketball Completes Incoming Class By Signing Drew Cushingberry
Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's basketball head coach Andy Bronkema and his staff have added yet another talented playmaker to the program's 2014 recruiting class as FSU recently inked prep all-state guard Drew Cushingberry (Romeo).
The 6-2 guard averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game as a senior in the 2013-14 season for Romeo High School, where he was coached by his father, Marvin. He joins seven others who have previously signed with the Bulldogs as members of Bronkema's first recruiting class.
"We're excited to wrap up our 2014 recruiting class with another talented freshman," said Bronkema. "Drew is a very skilled player and has great length for a point guard. He fits our program's wants both academically and on the court with a high basketball IQ.
"His ability to see the floor and shoot the three will make him a fun teammate to play with and it's always nice to bring in a coaches' kid who's been around the game his entire life," he added.
Cushingberry claimed first-team All-Macomb County Red Division honors as a senior while earning the division's MVP honor. He was Co-Macomb County Player of the Year and recognized as both an Associated Press and Detroit News Class A All-State pick. Additionally, he picked up All-Metro East accolades.
Ranked as one of the top 50 prep seniors in the state, Cushingberry recorded a memorable triple-double this past season versus Macomb Dakota with 14 points, 21 rebounds and 13 assists. He played AAU basketball with The Family.
Cushingberry joins a Bulldog incoming class that also includes five other spring signees in junior college guard/forward Angelo Griffis (Kalamazoo/Central), who spent the past year at Glen Oaks Community College, along with standout West Michigan wing Markese Mayfield (Godwin Heights), talented combo guard Pakiya Ellis (Detroit/Allen), highly-regarded shooter Andrew Meacham (Northville) and athletic guard/forward Noah King (Detroit/Jesuit). In the fall signing period, FSU inked local standout guard Quinn Tyson (Big Rapids) and one of Northern Michigan's top big men in forward/center Zach Hankins (Charlevoix).
The large incoming class joins a Bulldog squad that is expected to return nearly every key piece from this past season after losing only a single senior in forward Raymoan McAfee.
"Assistant Coach Jim Lake and our staff have put together a talented class with potential," said Bronkema. "We now have a young generation of Bulldogs that will benefit from our upperclassmen teaching them how we do things around here. We are looking forward to getting to work."
The Ferris State men's basketball program has a long track record of success that includes more than 1,000 all-time victories, 13 GLIAC Championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. FSU has also reached the GLIAC Postseason Tournament eight of the last 10 years, which ranks as one of the conference's top showings over the past decade. The Bulldogs have won four league championships and twice reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen since 2004.
This past season, under Bronkema's directon for the first time, marked the 12th consecutive year to date in which FSU has finished with double-digit victories.
