Ferris State Completes Upper Peninsula Sweep With Win At Northern Michigan

Marquette, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad used a strong second-half to pull away for a 70-61 triumph over Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 6) inside NMU's Berry Events Center, giving FSU only its second road sweep of all three Upper Peninsuala Schools in more than 10 years.

The Bulldogs, who previously beat both Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech in the UP this year, wrapped up a long two-game trip by topping former FSU head coach Bill Sall. The win gave FSU its first sweep of the three Michigan opponents across the bridge since Sall's 2008-09 squad accomplished the feat. The 2004-05 squad also swept all three squads up north en route to a NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen appearance.

Overall, it represents only the third time FSU has beat all three teams on the road in the same campaign since 1988 and it also gave the Bulldogs a second consecutive sweep of NMU and MTU on the same two-game trip after it had been done only two other times since the 1988-89 campaign prior to the last two campaigns.

Senior forward James Chappell led the Bulldog charge with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in a double-double performance. He was joined in double-digits by senior forward Josh Fleming, who scored 15 points including clutch three-point shot late in the contest on an in-bounds play. Senior center Jared Stolicker chipped in with 10 points to help the FSU cause.

Ferris State posted a decisive 41-26 rebounding edge over Northern Michigan and pulled down 20 offensive boards, giving FSU a 25-15 margin in second chance scoring.

Overall, FSU shot 47% from the floor and made two-of-eight (25%) three's along with 16-of-23 (69.6%) free throws. NMU converted on 43% of its field goals and went four-of-17 (23.5%) from downtown along with nine-of-15 (60%) at the line.

Northern Michigan was paced by Donnell Cegers, who came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points. Teammate Jordan Perez added 14 points while Marcus Hall chipped in 13 points for NMU.

The Bulldogs finished with nine blocked shots, seven assists and a steal compared to Northern Michigan's 11 assists, eight steals and four blocks.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 19-4 overall and 13-4 in the GLIAC. Northern Michigan dropped to 6-15 overall and 4-13 in league play with its second loss to FSU this campaign.

Ferris State will return home to begin a three-game homestand on Thursday (Feb. 11) as FSU hosts Northwood in an 8 p.m. (ET) league game at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs then host Lake Superior State on Saturday (Feb. 13) starting at 3 p.m. (ET).
