Postgame Interview/Highlights
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad, which is ranked ninth in the 2017-18 Street & Smith's Division II Preseason National Poll, opened its preseason slate with a hard-fought 72-57 win over Aquinas on Saturday (Oct. 21) night inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs trailed by a single point at halftime, 29-28, but outscored the Saints 44-28 and pulled away down the stretch for the victory.
Senior guard Drew Cushingberry had a game-high tying 19 points in the Bulldog victory while junior All-America center Zach Hankins finished with 10 points and a contest-high 12 rebounds in a double-double performance.
The Bulldogs shot only 38.7% from the floor, but also forced 23 turnovers with their full-court defensive pressure and came away with eight blocked shots and 11 steals in the win.
Hankins finished with six blocks on the defensive end for Ferris State with three different competitors notching two steals apiece.
Overall, FSU converted on 24-of-62 field goals and sank four-of-20 (20%) three's along with 20-of-24 (83.3%) free throws. The Bulldogs also owned a slim 38-34 edge on the glass and hauled in 14 offensive boards, including three from redshirt freshman Jaylin McFadden.
Meanwhile, Aquinas hit on 23-of-53 (43.4%) field goals and went three-of-nine (33.3%) from three-point range while making only eight-of-13 (61.5%) free throws.
The Saints were led by 6-9 center Arsenio Arrington, who totaled a team-high 19 points with a majority coming in the first half before the Bulldogs and foul trouble slowed him down. He was the lone Aquinas player to reach double-digits in the setback.
Ferris State played a total of 14 players in the game, including two-sport newcomer DeShaun Thrower, who played in the Bulldog Football squad's exciting 28-27 win over rival Grand Valley State earlier in the day.
The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Sunday (Oct. 22) as they square off against former stars from the past in the annual Alumni Game inside Wink Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. (ET).
Following Sunday's Alumni Game, the Bulldogs will then head to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans in a preseason exhibition clash on Thursday (Oct. 26) starting at 7 p.m. (ET) inside the Breslin Center.
