Ferris State Basketball Heads To Upper Peninsula For Big Hoops Weekend

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball squads head to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders this week in GLIAC North Division action.

The Bulldogs will first visit Michigan Tech on Thursday (Jan. 10) for an evening twinbill in Houghton starting with the women's game at 5:30 p.m. (ET) and the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m. (ET) inside MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium.

Then, on Saturday (Jan. 12), FSU heads to Marquette to battle Northern Michigan in a GLIAC doubleheader. The women's game will get underway at 1 p.m. (ET) inside the Berry Events Center with the men's contest to follow at 3 p.m. (ET).

Both games will be aired live on local flagship station Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network with pregame coverage beginning a half-hour prior to the opening contest. The Ferris State women's squad is coming off an exciting GLIAC home win over Davenport and owns a 7-5 overall mark to date this year along with a 4-2 conference slate. The Bulldogs are currently tied for second place in the GLIAC North Division with Michigan Tech and both squads trail Northern Michigan by only a single game heading into the week.

Thursday's opponent, Michigan Tech, is currently 8-6 this year under first-year head coach Sam Hoyt and is 4-2 in the GLIAC. Meanwhile, the division-leading Wildcats are presently off to a 10-4 start this year under longtime head coach Troy Mattson and are 5-1 in conference play. They've won seven of their last 10 outings overall, but coming off a league road loss at nationally-ranked Ashland last Saturday.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs own an 11-6 mark this season and hold a 3-3 record in conference play, which is tied for first atop the GLIAC North Division along with three other schools, including Northern Michigan. Ferris State has won six of its past seven games overall.

Presently, Michigan Tech is 7-6 on the year heading into Thursday's game and only a game back in league play with a 2-4 GLIAC slate under veteran head coach Kevin Luke. NMU heads into the week at 8-5 overall and is one of the four teams tied atop the division at 3-3 along with FSU, Lake Superior State and Wisconsin-Parkside. The Wildcats are guided by former Bulldog head coach Bill Sall.

After this week's trip to the Upper Peninsula, both FSU squads will return home for a three-game homestand starting next Thursday (Jan. 17) against Purdue Northwest and Saturday (Jan. 19) versus Wisconsin-Parkside. FSU will play seven of its next nine league games overall at home following the trip this week.
