Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's basketball team fell 67-56 on Thursday (Feb. 7) to the nationally 16th-ranked Ashland Eagles in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play before a big crowd in a nationally-televised contest at Wink Arena.

Ferris State senior forward Markese Mayfield finished with a team-high 12 points and nine rebounds to go with a pair of steals in the game. Senior guard D'Angelo Hughes finished with eight assists in the contest for FSU in the NCAA Division II National Showcase Game of the Week.

Ashland shot 49 percent from the field while holding Ferris State to 32.8 percent on the night. The Bulldogs won the battle at the glass 36-34 as every Bulldog that played pulled down at least one board.

The Eagles finished with four in double-figures, led by Aaron Thompson, who had 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead all players in both categories.

Ferris State trailed 41-33 at halftime and was then outscored 26-23 in the second frame by Ashland. The Bulldogs managed to trim the Eagles' lead down to three points at one stage, but a key 8-0 run by Ashland enabled the visitors to remain in front.

Overall, AU outscored Ferris State 32-22 in the paint. Off the bench, the Bulldogs got 19 points to the Eagles' 12. Ferris State also outscored Ashland 16-10 in points off of turnovers.

Despite the loss, FSU remains a game out of first place in the GLIAC North Division standings.
