Ferris State Basketball Wraps Up Preseason With Close Home Triumph Over Calvin

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad closed out the exhibition season with a 79-76 win over visiting Calvin University on Tuesday (Oct. 22) night at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs built an 11-point lead late in the first half and held a 42-34 edge at halftime before the Knights rallied in the second half.

Calvin, which was guided by former FSU head coach Bill Sall, fought back and sank 12 three's in the game while eventually taking a six-point second half advantage.

However, Ferris State got a big performance down the stretch from junior wing Jaylin McFadden, who finished with a game-high 24 points while adding seven rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

Along with McFadden, senior forward Cole Walker scored 12 points and senior guard D'angelo Hughes had 10 for FSU in the win.

The Knights were led by Derrick DeVries, who tallied 23 points. Thad Shymanski added 17 points and Alex Bos contributed 11 points in addition to nine rebounds in the battle between the two longtime West Michigan foes.

Ferris State turned the ball over only nine times and forced 19 Calvin miscues in the game, which featured 11 lead changes and was tied seven times.

Overall, FSU led for more than 26 minutes of the game as they improved to 3-0 in the preseason.

The Bulldogs will open the regular-season Nov. 1-3 at the D2 Tipoff Classic in Anaheim, Calif. FSU faces Wayne State (Neb.) on Friday, Nov. 1, in the opener at 8:30 p.m. (ET) and will also face Texas-Permain Basin and Concordia (Calif.) in the event.
