Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad has been picked to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this season as the league announced its 2023-24 preseason poll on Tuesday.
Ferris State received five first-place votes by the league's member head coaches and 77 total points in being tabbed the favorite among the 10 competing institutions.
Along with being picked first, Bulldog senior guard Ben Davidson was tabbed as a Preseason All-GLIAC First Team honoree. A total of only five players from across the conference were named to the preseason first-team.
The Bulldogs' 77 total points were two more than Northern Michigan, which was picked second with 75 points and four first-place mentions. Grand Valley State was third (61) with Parkside fourth, totaling 50 points and the lone remaining top vote. Michigan Tech came in fifth (45), Saginaw Valley State sixth (41), Davenport and Lake Superior State tied for seventh (35) followed by Wayne State in eighth (20) and Purdue Northwest 10th (11).
FSU tips off the 2023-24 season looking to contend again for championship recognition.
Ferris State will open its 11th season under head coach Andy Bronkema with lofty preseason expectations again. The Bulldogs have won 20 games or more eight times in the past nine years to date.
Ferris State finished last season with a 24-9 overall mark. The Bulldogs also advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinals, which was the program's second-straight and fifth trip to the second round since 2016. Overall, the Bulldogs made their 16th all-time NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.
A big nucleus is back this year for the Bulldogs, who return 14 squad members from a season ago, including a strong group of 11 letterwinners. FSU also added a pair of graduate transfers along with four incoming freshmen this season.
The 2023-24 men's basketball regular season will tipoff on Nov. 10-11 when the Bulldogs travel to Painesville, Ohio, for a regional crossover event. FSU will face former GLIAC rival Northwood in the season opener on Nov. 10 before meeting host Lake Erie in the weekend finale on Nov. 11.
The Bulldogs' home opener is set for Wednesday, Nov. 15, versus Cleary at Wink Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
