Bio

Chris Young comes to Ferris State University after a 12-year professional basketball playing career at the highest level in various European countries including Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Italy.

This is Young’s first season as a member of head coach Andy Bronkema's staff. He currently works with the team's post players and assists with on-court instruction, skill development and defensive strategies. He is passionate and excited about learning all aspects of basketball operations such as recruiting, team logistics, film breakdown, organizing basketball camp, fundraising and community outreach.

Some of his professional career highlights include:

  • Belgian league all-league first team 2009-13
  • Belgian center of the year for 2009-11
  • Belgian league Star of the Coaches (MVP) in 2011
  • As the team captain he lead his team to the League Finals in 2006, 2011 and 2014 and the Belgian Cup Finals in 2012 and 2013, winning the Cup Title in 2006 and 2012 and the Super Cup Title in 2013 and 2014.

Collegiately, Young played at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2002. He averaged a career-high 11.4 points per game in his final season as a Wolverine. He also averaged nearly six rebounds per outing and led the team in blocked shots (40). As the team captain, he played in all 29 games of his senior year, averaging a career-best 31.6 minutes. Overall, he played in every game of his career at Michigan (117 games) and started the last 57 contests of his career. He ranks third best all-time field goal percentage in the Wolverine annals with 60.3 percent for his career, which was the best field-goal percentage in the Big Ten Conference for the 2000-01 season.

He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management and Communications.

Prior to his time at U of M, Young went to Detroit Catholic Central High School from 1995 to 1998. During his high school basketball career, he was voted top 10 in Mr. Basketball for the state of Michigan in 1998, earned Class A all-state first team honors as a senior and was chosen as one of the top 10 centers in the United States by ESPN in 1997. He won back-to-back Catholic League championships in 1996 and 1997. He led Catholic Central to 19-5 record before falling to the class A regional final in double overtime.

Young and his wife, Heather, who is currently working in Ferris’ University Advancement and Marketing division as the Communications Specialist, reside in Big Rapids with their son, Alexander.
