Men's Golf Claims Sixth Place At Great Lakes Invitational I Tournament

The nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's golf team had to contend with the elements en route to placing sixth overall with a two-round 596-stroke total (+20) at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament I (Sept. 20-21), which was held on the par 72, 7,003-yard Hawkshead Country Club course in South Haven, Mich.

With the windy conditions, Ferris State turned in a final-round 303 score in Tuesday's (Sept. 21) action after carding a 293-stroke total in Monday's (Sept. 20) opening-round action.   The Bulldogs finished two strokes behind fifth-place Missouri-St. Louis (594, +18) and one stroke ahead of seventh-place Bellarmine (597, +21).  Indianapolis captured top team honors among the 23 schools participating with a two-over par 578 score followed by Drury (590, +14) and Grand Valley State (591, +15).  The individual medalist was Drury's Andrew Funk, who carded a three-under par 141 two-round stroke total.

Senior Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) was the top performer for the Bulldogs with a 147 score (72-75=147, +3) to finish tied for 11th place with three other individuals.  A highlight for Brown occurred in Tuesday's final-round play on the par four, 330-yard 11th hole in which he recorded a hole-in-one.  Brown's noteworthy accomplishment was on the heels of Grand Valley State's Travis Shooks, who aced the par three, 182-yard sixth hole.

Senior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) shot a four-over 148 score (74-74=148, +4) to gain a four-way share of 15th-place honors while freshman Trenton Davison (Rockford) made the most of his collegiate debut by producing a 149-stroke total (73-76=149, +5) to earn a tie for 19th place.

Junior Ian Straayer (Caledonia/Grandville) shot a 152 (74-78=152, +8) to finish tied for 36th place.  Senior Kyle Wittenbach's (Lowell) registered a 41st-place tying 153 score (75-78=153, +9) to wrap up the Bulldogs' scoring.

The Bulldogs, who were listed 18th nationally in the 2010-11 Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll, will now get set to compete in Grand Valley State's The Arendsen tournament this weekend (Sept. 25-26) at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
