Bulldogs Tied For 18th In NCAA Super Regional First-Round Action

The Ferris State University men's golf team is tied for 18th place after the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional held this Monday (May 2) at the par 72, 6,842-yard Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky.

Ferris State carded a 303-stroke total (+15) in opening-round play and is presently tied with Indianapolis (303, +15).  Wayne State leads the 20-team field as a result of shooting an one-under par 287, which is two strokes in front of second-place Abilene Christian (289, +1).

Senior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) currently is the Bulldogs' top performer with an eighth-place tying 71 score (-1).  Simons, a 2010-11 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Honorable Mention selection, presently is five strokes behind Abilene Christian's Cyril Bouniol's tourney-best six-under par 66-stroke total.

Senior Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell) turned in a first-round 76 score (+4) and the 2011 All-GLIAC First-Team selection is currently midst a 15-way tie for 61st-place honors.  Freshman Trent Davison (Rockford) is tied for 76th place following a 77 score (+5) while junior Ian Straayer (Caledonia/Grandville) compiled a 92nd-place tying 79-stroke total (+7).

Senior Richard Weisenberger (New Hudson/South Lyon) rounds out the Bulldogs' scoring with an 81 score (+9), which presently is good for a 105th-place tie.  

Ferris State is seeded eighth in the Midwest Region and earned its NCAA Regional berth by winning the GLIAC Championships in a sudden-death playoff this past fall (Oct. 3-4) at Grosse Ile, Mich.     

The top five teams and the top two individuals not affiliated with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will qualify for the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships (May 16-20) at Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The Bulldogs, who are presently competing in their ninth straight regional tournament, will begin second-round play this Tuesday (May 3) in the 54-hole tourney.  Complete coverage and live statistics will be available at this link.
