FSU Finishes Fifth At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team placed fifth overall in the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which wrapped up on Monday (Oct. 3) at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich.

The Bulldogs shot rounds of 313, 306 and 297 to finish at 916 (+52), respectively, for the 54-hole event.  FSU entered Monday's second day of action in seventh place, but moved up two spots following the completion of the second round in addition to the third and final 18 holes.

Grand Valley State was crowned as this year's team champion with a score of 887 (+23) on the par 72 course.  Tiffin came in second (903) followed by Wayne Sate (914), Northwood (915) and FSU as only two strokes seperated third and fifth place.

The individual champion was GVSU's Chris Cunningham, who carded a 217 to finish at one-over par for the tournament.

Sophomore Trent Davison placed tied for fifth overall in leading the Bulldogs as he fired a six-over par score of 222 in the two days of action.  Davison shot a 73 in the opening round followed by scores of 77 and 72 for FSU.

FSU junior Tyler Robinson came in tied for 10th in the field at 226 (+10) with rounds of 77, 75 and 74.  He was followed by senior Garrett Simons, who posted a 233 (+17) to tie for 24th place on rounds of 84, 73 and 76.

Senior Gary Bissell placed tied for 34th place with a 237 (+21) with sophomore Sam Stark finishing 47th overall at 243 (+27).  Bissell posted scores of 79, 81 and 77 while Stark shot rounds of 86, 82 and 75.

A total of 12 teams and 60 golfers took part in the 2011 GLIAC Championships, which consisted of 54 holes of competition.  The low four of five scores counted towards the respective team score for each squad.  Ferris State served as this year's official host institution for the event at Eagle Eye.

THe Bulldogs entered the tournament as the defending GLIAC men's golf championion as FSU previously defeated Wayne State a year ago in the event held at the Grosse Ile (Mich.) Golf and Country Club course. Last year's conference crown represented the 19th in the program's history and the Bulldogs' first since the 2004-05 season.
