Men's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors In Event

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team came within a single stroke of winning a largely Division I field at the Detroit Titans Invitational held on Friday and Saturday (April 13-14) at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland, Mich.

FSU finished the three-round tournament with a 866 team score and was just a single stroke behind champion Loyola, which carded a 865.  FSU fired rounds of 292, 287 and 287 to close within a single shot.

Western Illinois took third place (878) followed by Grand Valley State (892) and Cleveland State (894) in the top five of the 13-team tournament.  Most of the field included Division I schools such as Detroit Mercy, Youngstown State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Oakland and more.

The individual winner was Western Illinois' Kurt Slattery with a seven-under par total of 209 over the three rounds on the par 72 course mearsuring 7,142 yards.  He posted a tournament-best 66 in the final round.

FSU was paced by Trent Davison, who tied for fifth place individually at 214 for the tournament on rounds of 75, 71 and 68.  His final-round score of 68 was the second-best mark in the final day of action.  Overall, he finished at two-under for the tournament.

Kyle Wittenbach came in seventh for the Bulldogs at 215 with scores of 75, 68 and 72 over the three rounds.  He finished at one-under par for the event.

Senior Garrett Simons tied for 13th place at 220 with totals of 74, 71 and 75 while Gary Bissell came in 15th at 222 on rounds of 72, 77 and 72.

FSU's fifth finisher was Tyler Robinson, who tied for 23rd with a three-round score of 226.  He carded marks of 70, 81 and 75.

Scott Schuitema competed as an individual and was tied for 57th at 238 as he posted totals of 75, 78 and 85.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at the Ashland Invitational on April 21-22 in Ashland, Ohio.
