Men's Golf Tied For Seventh After First Round

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team carded a 300 team score and is currently tied for seventh overall in the 2012 NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional Tournament, which began on Monday (May 7) at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo.

The Bulldogs fired a 12-over total and are midst a four-way tie for seventh place overall along with Central Oklahoma, St. Edward's (Texas) and West Texas A&M in the 20-team tournament.

Central Missouri posted a 286 in the first 18 holes of action and leads the event with a two-under score.  Northern Kentucky is second in the field at 292 (+4) followed by both Bellarmine (Ky.) and Grand Valley State at 296 (+8) in the top four.

FSU was led by Gary Bissell, who shot a first-round 74 score on the par 72 course.  He ranks tied for 19th individually after the opening day of competition.

Next up for FSU was Trent Davison and Kyle Wittenbach as both are tied for 28th in the field with a 75.

The Bulldogs' Richard Weisenberger posted a 76 and is tied for 46th while senior Garrett Simons was two strokes back with a 78 and is tied for 78th in the field.

The day one individual leaders were Central Missouri's Jared King and GVSU's Travis Shooks as both posted four-under marks of 68 on the course measuring 7,112 yards.

Action continues on Tuesday (May 8) with final round competition on Wednesday (May 9) in the 54-hole event.

FSU is making its 10th consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearance in a row. The Midwest/South Central Regional is being hosted by Lincoln (Mo.) University and consists of 10 teams from the Midwest Region along with 10 from the South Central Region.

The top five teams and the top two individuals not affiliated with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2012 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 15-19 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., as part of the 2012 Division II Spring Championships Festival to be hosted by Bellarmine Univeristy and the Louisville Sports Commission.
