Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team has been crowned as the Division II Academic National Champions for the recently-completed 2013-14 season, according to an announcement made today by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

The Bulldogs, who made their 12th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance this past spring, were recognized by the GCAA for having the nation's highest total grade point average at the Division II level. It marks the first time ever in which FSU has accomplished the feat.

This year's list of academic national champions, presented by Farmers Insurance, included DePaul (Division I), Ferris State (Division II), Carnegie Mellon (Division III), SCAD Atlanta (NAIA), Dodge City Community College (NJCAA DI) and Walters State (NJCAA DII).

DePaul claimed the Division I title for the fourth time while Carnegie Mellon earned its second honor in the top spot in Division III. It was the first Team Academic title for Ferris State, SCAD Atlanta and Walters State.

Overall, a total of 141 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition, including 23 at the Division II level. To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

President's Special Recognition was given to programs registering a 3.5 GPA or above and only two Division II schools were included in that select group, including Ferris State.

Along with the six national champions, the President's Special Recognition list also included Alabama State, Arizona, Brown, Duke, Embry Riddle - Arizona, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Missouri, Missouri State, Redlands, SCAD Atlanta, Tiffin, Utah State, Valparaiso, Washington & Lee and Webster. The 20 teams to earn this distinction matches the high also met last season.

Previously, Ferris State also had three student-athletes honored by GCAA as 2014 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, including senior Trent Davison (Rockford), junior Chris Eaton (Edwardsburg) and junior Sam Stark (Hartland). The three honorees were the most of any Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member institution.

The Bulldogs, under seventh-year head coach Mike Mignano, wrapped up action in the 2014 NCAA Central/Midwest Super Regional Championships by coming away with a 13th-place team finish in Eureka, Mo.
