Ferris State Men's Golf Wins Watrous Intercollegiate Team Championship

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team started off the 2014-15 campaign on a winning note as the Bulldogs won the Al Watrous Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 13-14) in Bay City, Mich.

The Bulldogs claimed the team championship in the eight-squad field at the Bay City Country Club as they carded a two-round total of 582 to win the event by six strokes over second-place Northwood. Lake Superior State came in third (590) followed by host SVSU (591) in the top four overall.

Ferris State posted a 294 score in Saturday's opening round before firing the tournament's low round with a 288 figure on Sunday. FSU finished +6 overall for the two-day tournament on the par 72 course measuring 6,860 yards.

FSU had a pair of individuals finish in the top five overall as both junior Ben Cook and sophomore Cody Simons tied for third overall. They both shot a 144 total for the two days and were only two strokes behind individual medalist Paul Ostby of Northwood, who posted a 142 figure.

Cook shot a one-under par 71 on Saturday before carding a 73 in the final 18 holes of action. Meanwhile, Simons was exactly opposite as he shot a 73 over the first round followed by a 71 the final day. They were part of a four-way tie for third place.

FSU junior Zak Kiefer placed tied for seventh with a 145 on rounds of 74 and 71, respectively, as FSU had three individuals finish among the top 10 in the tournament.

Bulldog freshman Seth Terpstra tied for 19th in his first collegiate tournament with a 149 total on rounds of 71 and 78 while senior Sam Stark tied for 27th with a 152 total. He posted a 79 in the first round, but improved by six strokes Sunday to come in with a 73 on the day.

Senior Chris Eaton also shared 27th place with a 152 total on rounds of 77 and 75 for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, sophomore Tyler Siech shot a 158 to share 46th place on rounds of 76 and 82 overall.

Ferris State will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21, as FSU takes part in the GLIAC Fall Invitational in South Haven, Mich.
