Ferris State Men's Golf Fires 310 Team Total On Day One At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team opened action in the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships by shooting a 310 team figure on Friday (April 15) at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

The Bulldogs are only 12 strokes off the lead held by Tiffin and Malone following the first round as both squads fired a league-best 298 total in the first 18 holes of competition. A total of only 16 strokes seperates the top 11 teams in the field after day one.

FSU was paced by sophomore Jack Weller, who shot a 76 and is tied for 18th overall. Junior teammate Tyler Siech was a stroke back with a 77, which is good for a share of 22nd place.

The Bulldogs' Ryan Bayer, a sophomore, carded a 78 and is tied for 32nd with both sophomore Seth Terpstra and freshman Andrew Hammett sharing 38th place with scores of 79 on Friday.

The 2016 GLIAC Championships will consist of 54 holes as the teams will play one round per day with the final two rounds set for Saturday and Sunday (April 16-17).  The low four of five scores count towards the respective team score for each squad.

In 2015, The Virtues Golf Club was ranked as the number one public course in Ohio and 7th among the top 100 public golf courses in America, by Golf Digest. Located just 40 miles from downtown Columbus, The Virtues' spectacular Arthur Hills-designed championship golf course with upscale banquet and event amenities, delicious dining and variety of player development programs offer any golfers a great reason to visit.

Tiffin enters the league tournament as the defending champions from the fall of 2014, the last time the championship was held before moving to the spring season this year.

Ferris State earned runner-up honors at the 2012 GLIAC Men's Golf Championship before placing sixth in 2013 and eighth in 2014.  Overall, the Bulldogs have captured 19 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history.
