Ferris State Men's Golf Claims Second-Straight Tourney Championship

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team notched its second victory in as many tournaments this fall as the Bulldogs claimed the 2016 GLIAC North Invitational championship over the weekend in South Haven, Mich.

Ferris State posted a two-round, 572 score at HawksHead Links to finish 13 strokes in front of runner-up Grand Valley State in the field of 12 teams. Both Findlay and Ashland tied for third with 586 totals.

The men's squad joined the FSU women's team as weekend champions as they won their own Bulldog Invitational at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

"The course was scoreable today for the men and we took advantage of it," said first-year FSU head coach Kyle Wittenbach. "It feels great to get another win."

The Bulldog men were three strokes out of the lead following day one action after shooting a 290 in the opening 18 holes of play, but came back with a tournament-best 282 figure in Sunday's round to finish first on the leaderboard.

Ferris State's Jack Weller emerged as the individual medalist in the tourney with a 140 score. He shot a one-under par 71 in round one and then fired a 69 in the second round.

Junior Seth Terpstra also placed in the top three overall as he was tied for third with a 142 finish. He also shot a 69 in the second round after recording a 73 in round one.

Meanwhile, senior Ben Cook posted a 69 in round one along with a 76 in the second round to finish tied for ninth with a 145 total. FSU's Andrew Hammett carded a 147 on rounds of 77 and 70 over the two days, respectively, to also finish in the top 20. 

Finally, Ryan Bayer wound up tied for 50th overall on rounds of 79 and 74, respectively, while notching a final total of 153 for the two-day tournament.

FSU's Cody Simons also competed as an individual and finished 67th with a 164 on identical rounds of 82 on Saturday and Sunday.

The Bulldogs will next take part in the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invitational Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Tiffin, Ohio.
