Ferris State Shoots Best Round Of Season In Winning Special "Cats vs Dawgs" Golf Duel

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team had one of its most impressive rounds of the season over the weekend as the Bulldogs squared off against Northern Michigan in a rare duel with a unique format at FSU's Katke Golf Course.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats battled on Saturday and Sunday (April 15-16) in a special "medal match play" format in which opposing players competed in an 18-hole match to win a point for their team. Billed as a "Cats vs Dawgs Duel", the eight versus eight competition took place both days with Ferris State beating NMU by a final 10-6 count.

In day one action on Saturday, the Bulldogs picked up 4 1/2 points to 3 1/2 for the Wildcats. FSU then captured 5 1/2 points in Sunday's final day of competition with Northern Michigan netting 2 1/2 on day two.

While the match was not scored with a team total, the Bulldogs' posted a season-best 278 figure in final day play. FSU's Jack Weller highlighted the action with a bogey-free 65 scvore on day two in helping the Bulldogs to their best round of the year.

"This format simulates the final eight format at the national championships and was a fun event to play against our rivals from Northern Michigan," said FSU head coach Kyle Wittenbach. "It was also a nice confidence booster for our guys heading into the GLIAC Championships this weekend."

The 2017 GLIAC Men's & Women's Golf Championships will take place this Friday thru Sunday (April 21-23) in Nashport, Ohio. Ferris State is currently ranked fifth in the region and 17th nationally in the latest collegiate men's golf rankings.
