Ferris State Holds First-Day Lead At GLIAC Men's Golf Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team emerged as the day one leader at the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships as the Bulldogs carded a 295 team score on Friday (April 21) at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

Ferris State's 295 figure to open the three-day league championships gives the Bulldogs a four-stroke lead over rival and second-place Grand Valley State, which shot a 299 team figure in the opening round of the 54-hole event.

A total of 13 league member schools are competing in the tournament on the par 72 course with Tiffin currently residing in third place (302) along with Ashland and Northern Michigan tied for fourth place (308) overall.

Along with being the team leader following first-round play, the Bulldogs also have the individual leader as senior Ben Cook fired a two-under par 70 to grab the early lead. He holds a two-shot advantage over Hillsdale's Joel Pietila, who fired an even-par 72 in the first round.

Ferris State's Jack Weller shot a two-over 74 and is tied for fifth in the field following round one with Seth Terpstra presently tied for eighth on a day one 75 score.

FSU's Andrew Hammett is tied for 15th with a 76 in round one and finally Ryan Bayer is tied for 55th with an 83 in the opening round of action.

The 2017 GLIAC Championships consist of 54 holes as the teams will play one round per day thru Sunday.  The low four of five scores will count towards the respective team score for each squad.

In 2016, The Virtues Golf Club was ranked as the number one public course in Ohio and among the top 100 public golf courses in America, by Golf Digest. Located just 40 miles from downtown Columbus, The Virtues' spectacular Arthur Hills-designed championship golf course with upscale banquet and event amenities, delicious dining and variety of player development programs offer any golfers a great reason to visit.

Action continues with round two play on Saturday (April 22) at The Virtues, which measures 7,243 yards from the men's tees.
