Ferris State Men's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors At 2017 GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team finished as the runner-up in the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships as the 54-hole event wrapped up on Sunday (April 23) at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

FSU, which held the first day lead and trailed rival Grand Valley State by two strokes after two rounds, got off to a slow start in the final round before finishing 11 strokes behind the Lakers with a three-round, 901 total for the three days of action.

The Bulldogs shot a 306 over the final 18 holes after carding a 295 score in the opening round followed by a 300 in round two to finish at +37 for the event. GVSU carded a 890 total, which included a 297 in the final round.

Senior Ben Cook paced Ferris State as he tied for sixth overall with a 224 score for the 54 holes. He shot a two-under par 70 in round one followed by back-to-back 77 figures in each of the final two rounds.

FSU's Seth Terpstra, who joined Cook midst a three-way tie for first heading into the final round, placed tied for ninth in the field. He netted a 225 score with rounds of 75 on Friday and even-par 72 on Saturday prior to his final round 78 on Sunday.

The Bulldogs' Jack Weller also placed among the top 15 finishers as he came in tied for 13th with a 226 score. He also shot 78 in the last round after identical scores of 74 each of the first two days.

Ferris State's Andrew Hammett wound up tied for 27th at 232 following a 79 in Sunday's action. His marks also included a 76 in round one and a 77 in round two.

Finally, FSU's Ryan Bayer tied for 29th in the field and was only a stroke behind Hammett with a 233 score. He shot his best round on Sunday with a one-over par 73 after carding scores of 83 Friday and 77 on Saturday.

The 2017 GLIAC Championships consisted of 54 holes as the teams played one round per day Friday thru Sunday.  The low four of five scores will counted towards the respective team score for each squad.

In 2016, The Virtues Golf Club was ranked as the number one public course in Ohio and among the top 100 public golf courses in America, by Golf Digest. The course measured 7,243 yards from the men's tees.

The Bulldogs will now await the NCAA Division II Men's Golf selection announcement, which will take place on Friday (April 28) evening via NCAA.com.
