Ferris State Men's Golf Tied For 7th Place After One Round At NCAA Super Regional

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad carded a 283 team total and is tied for seventh place overall following round one action on Monday (May 8) at the 2017 NCAA Division II Midwest/Central Super Regional being held at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Neb.

The Bulldogs' 283 figure in Monday's opening round is five under for the first 18 holes of action and is only 11 strokes behind leader Central Missouri. FSU is also only four strokes out of second place, which is currently held by Lindenwood (Mo.) at -9 for the tournament.

After round one, Ferris State is presently one of four teams tied for seventh place and among 10 teams in the field who are -5 or better thru one round.

FSU was led in the first round by Jack Weller, who shot a four-under 68 and is currently tied for 10th overall. Senior Ben Cook and Seth Terpstra both shot a one-under 71 and are tied for 33rd in the field.

Meanwhile, FSU's Andrew Hammett came in with a one-over 73 and is tied for 62nd with Ryan Bayer notching a two-over par 74 for a share of 72nd place in the individual field.

The first-round leader is McKendree's (Ill.) Keenai Sampson, who fired an impressive nine-under 63 total in round one.

Ferris State is taking part in the NCAA Division II Super Regional for the 15th consecutive year with this year's event taking place Monday thru Wednesday (May 8-10) at Awarii Dunes Golf Course.

The Midwest/Central Men's Regional is being hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney and consists of 10 teams from the Midwest Region along with 10 from the Central Region.  Four individuals from each region are also competing in the 54-hole tournament.

At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two individuals not affiliated with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2017 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 22-26 at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. The finals will be hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and Central Florida Sports Commission.

Along with number five seed Ferris State, those teams from the Midwest Region who are making the men's super regional tourney appearance are top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis, Grand Valley State, Indianapolis, Bellarmine (Ky.), FSU, Saginaw Valley State, Wayne State, Marysville, Tiffin and Trevecca Nazarene in respective seeding order.

Central Missouri is the Central Region's top seed and followed by Arkansas Tech, Central Oklahoma, Lindenwood (Mo.), Henderson State (Ark.), Southwestern Oklahoma State, Washburn (Kan.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Harding (Ark.) and Minnesota State-Mankato. 

Ferris State's current 15-year NCAA Championship appearance streak in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.

Action continues on Tuesday at the Super Regional with second-round play at the Awarii Dunes Golf Course.
