Two Ferris State Golfers Qualify For Major National Tournaments

Big Rapids, Mich. - A pair of Ferris State University golfers recently had big weekends as both qualified for major national competitions.

Bulldog men's golfer Jack Weller (Swartz Creek) qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championships slated for Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. In a qualifying event, Weller carded scores of 74 and 64 while tying the 18-hole course record in the final round and setting a new personal career tournament low at Forest Akers West Golf Course in Lansing. His eight-under par 64 over the final 18 holes was bogey free.

"I'm very excited to get a chance to compete on the biggest stage in Amateur golf," said Weller. "Being able to represent Ferris State, my family, and my friends makes this experience something I will never forget and I look toward to making the most of it while I'm there."

Meanwhile, incoming freshman women's golfer Baylee Thompson (Lapeer) qualified for the US Girls Junior Championship by shooting a 70 (-2) at Silver Lake Country Club. She'll take part in the 69th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship slated for July 24-29 at Boone Valley Golf Club in Missouri.

"I just feel honored to have the opportunity to compete at a championship with so many elite juniors from around the world," said Thompson. "I'm proud to represent the Bulldog pride at such a great tournament."

Both golfers will compete for the Bulldogs in the upcoming 2017-18 campaign.

"Having two Bulldogs compete in USGA events this summer is a great indicator of the work ethic and persistence our players," said FSU head coach Kyle Wittenbach. "The future is bright for Ferris State Golf."
