Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad, which reached the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals last spring, is ranked 12th nationally in the 2017-18 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division II Preseason Coaches Poll.
The preseason #12 listing is believed to be one of the program's highest preseason rankings ever and FSU is the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) team found in the poll. The Bulldogs are joined from the Midwest Region by Missouri-St. Louis at the #18 slot.
The top five schools in the preseason listing are all from the state of Florida with Florida Southern (#1), West Florida (#2), Barry (#3), Lynn (#4) and Florida Tech (#5) found in the rankings.
Ferris State advanced to the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Florida this past May. FSU was the only school outside of the state of Florida or South Carolina to finish among the top seven teams in the country in stroke play. The Bulldogs fell to eventual national champion Florida Southern in the round of eight.
The Bulldogs made their 15th all-time national championships appearance and first berth since 2010 after a runner-up finish in the super regional championships. Ferris State's current 15-year NCAA Championship appearance streak in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
The national quarterfinal appearance capped off what was an exciting first season for the Bulldogs under first-year head coach Kyle Wittenbach, a FSU alum. The Bulldogs won four tournaments in the fall, earned a top 10 national ranking, claimed runner-up honors at the Super Regional Championship and placed a school-best seventh overall in stroke play at the national championships last season before earning a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Ferris State is slated to open up the 2017-18 campaign with four tournaments this fall, starting with the Al Watrous Memorial hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Sept. 9-10.
