Ferris State Golf Coach Kyle Wittenbach Continues Strong Michigan "Major" Showings

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's golf programs experienced strong success in the debut season for head coach Kyle Wittenbach in the 2016-17 campaign, which included a national quarterfinal showing and a top 10 national ranking for the men's squad.

The success didn't stop there, though, for Wittenbach, who's presently midst his second campaign leading both teams this fall.

This past summer, Wittenbach competed in the 2017 Michigan PGA Championship which was held at the Flint Golf Club and had yet another solid showing as he made his 11th cut in 11 tries at Michigan "Major Events" including the Michigan Open and the Michigan PGA Championship.

"It just felt great to compete with my fellow PGA members and remind myself of what tournament golf is like this past summer so that I can continue to coach my players with a greater understanding of what they are going through and feeling during events," Wittenbach said. "Tournament golf is certainly a different beast."

Under Wittenbach's direction a year ago, Ferris State advanced to the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships in Florida last May. FSU was the only school outside of the state of Florida or South Carolina to finish among the top seven teams in the country in stroke play. The Bulldogs fell to eventual national champion Florida Southern in the round of eight.

The Bulldogs made their 15th all-time national championships appearance and first berth since 2010 after a runner-up finish in the super regional championships. Ferris State's current 15-year NCAA Championship appearance streak in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.

The national quarterfinal appearance capped off what was an exciting first season for the Bulldogs under Wittenbach, a FSU alum. The Bulldogs won four tournaments last fall, earned a top 10 national ranking, claimed runner-up honors at the Super Regional Championship and placed a school-best seventh overall in stroke play at the national championships last season before earning a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Both the Ferris State men's and women's teams are currently midst completing their fall slates with the women set to take part in the Trevecca Nazarene Classic on Oct. 23-24 in Nashville, Tenn.
