Two Ferris State Men's Golf Alums Among Top Five Heading To Final Round At Michigan Open

Big Rapids, Mich. - A pair of Ferris State University men's golf alums will head into the final round of the 101st Michigan Open Championship on Thursday (June 14) ranked among the top five competitors in the event at The Bear Golf Course located at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

FSU alum Eric Lilleboe of Okemos is currently second on the leaderboard with a three-round total of 208 overall and trails leader Jake Kneen of White Lake by three strokes.

Meanwhile, another alum and current Ferris State men's and women's head golf coach Kyle Wittenbach surged up the charts on Wednesday in round three and is fifth overall with a 215 figure.

Lilleboe opened the event, which is presented by Yamaha Golf Cars Plus and Mercy Elite, by shooting a 70 in the first round on Monday. He came back with an impressive 66 figure on Tuesday and held the 36-hole lead before notching a 72 in Wednesday's round.

Wittenbach shot identical scores of 73 in each of the first two rounds before carding one of the best day three figures with a 69 to climb 15 spots heading into the final round of competition.

The duo paced a group of former alums and golfers with ties to the Ferris State program taking part in this year's prestigious event.

The Michigan Open, one of the state's longest-running golf events, began in 1916 and was first won by Leo Diegel, who also played in the inaugural Ryder Cup matches and The Masters.

Historically, some of golf's most famous names are listed on the Michigan Open's James D. Standish, Jr. Trophy. Walter Hagen, the father of modern professional golf and captain of the first five U. S. Ryder Cup teams, won the event in 1921. Michigan PGA Professional and Ferris State alum Scott Hebert is tied with Al Watrous for all-time Michigan Open titles with six.
