Ferris State Men's Golf Takes Runner-Up Honors At NMU Match Play Invitational

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad opened up its 2018-19 season with a strong performance in the Northern Michigan Match-Play Invitational held on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 8-9) at the Greywalls Course of the Marquette Golf Club in Marquette.

The Bulldogs tallied 30.5 total points, including 16 points in day one action followed by 14.5 points in day two competition, while finishing second overall behind Wayne State. The Warriors just edged FSU with 31 total team points.

FSU's Jack Weller earned runner-up honors in the championship bracket competition in leading the Bulldogs. He advanced to the finals before falling to Dustin Pumford of Saginaw Valley State, finishing with a 5-1 overall record.

"The men had a great time in Marquette this weekend," said FSU head coach Kyle Wittenbach. "It was a great event and match play is always fun to play. Jack's match for the individual championship came down to the last hole but Dustin was just too solid.

"This event will help us prepare for the new GLIAC conference championship format where the top 4 teams qualify for match play after a 36 hole stroke play portion," he added.

FSU's Andrew Hammett also had a strong showing and reached the semifinals of the championship flight before falling to Pumford.

A total of eight different Bulldogs took part in the competition. Each match was a nine-hole contest over the two days of the tournament.

Ferris State will host its own Bulldog Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16, at FSU's Katke Golf Course.
