Ferris State Men's Golf Finishes As Runner-Up At Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff

Big Rapids, Mich.- The Ferris State University men's golf squad opened the spring season with a runner-up finish in the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff held Wednesday thru Friday (March 6-8) in Tampa, Fla.

The Bulldogs shot a three-round score of 913 to finish at +73 for the 54 holes of action and trailed only champion Grand Valley State, which carded a 877 figure, in the six-team event.

Ferris State opened action on Wednesday with a 310 team score and then came back with a 301 figure on Thursday followed by a final round 302 score on Friday.

Bulldog senior Jack Weller paced FSU as he shared ffith place overall with a 223 score (+13) on the par 70 course measuring 6,480 yards. He shot a 75 in round one before carding a 76 in round two and a 72 in the final round.

FSU freshman Thomas Hursey finished tied for ninth overall with a 226 (+16) score for the three rounds of action. He followed up his first-round 79 figure with a 74 in round two and a 73 over the final 18 holes.

Ferris State senior Andrew Hammett also finished in the top 15 overall as he placed 15th at 229 (+19) in the event. He notched a 76 in round one and carded a 75 in the middle round before wrapping up the tournament with a 78 on Friday.

Another Bulldog senior, Seth Terpstra, placed 21st in the field with a 237 (+27) score. He tallied rounds of 80, 76 and 81 over the three days of action, respectively.

Finally, senior Ryan Bayer placed 27th overall at +35 for the three rounds as he shot a 84 in the opening round followed by a 82 on Thursday and a 79 on Friday.

Ferris State also had several golfers compete individually in the tournament, including a pair who finished in the top 15 overall. Sophomore Andrew Proctor came in eighth at 225 (+15) on rounds of 76, 72 and 77 with sophomore Jason Martinus tied for 11th with a 227 (+17) score. She shot a 75 in the first round and fired back-to-back 76's the last two days.

Junior Joshua Jeffords also competed individually and shot a 235 score (+25), which was good for a share of 19th place. He totaled a 79 in each of the first two rounds and then closed with a 77 in Friday's action. FSU freshman Daniel Shattuck was the next individual finisher at 242 (+32) for 25th place with rounds of 81, 81 and 80 overall.

Finally, senior Brad Walling totaled a 282 score (+72) for 36th place in the field with a first-round 94 score followed by a 95 on Thursday and a 93 in Friday's action.

The Bulldogs will next take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17, in Georgetown, Ky.
