Ferris State Men's Golf Wins Team Championship At SVSU Spring Invite

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team stormed back to post a big win over the weekend as the Bulldogs captured the team championship in the 2019 Saginaw Valley State Spring Invitational held at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky.

Ferris State shot an impressive 276 team figure in Sunday's final round of competition to move up six spots in the team standings and claim the triumph. FSU had opened the two-day tournament with a 291 figure in the opening round Saturday and was in seventh place before bettering its team figure by 15 strokes over the final 18 holes of action.

Overall, the Bulldogs carded a 567 figure for the 36 holes and finished six strokes in front of runner-up Grand Valley State, which shot a 573 team total. A total of 21 schools were in the field.

Along with being crowned as the team champion, FSU also had the individual medalist as senior Andrew Hammett earned the victory with a 136 total over the two days of action. He shot a 70 in round one on Saturday before carding an impressive 66 in the final round. His 136 total was two strokes in front of second-place finisher Bryce Messner of GVSU, who shot a 138 overall.

Fellow senior Jack Weller also earned all-tournament team honors by coming in tied for third overall at 139 for the event. Weller shot a 71 in round one followed by a 68 on Sunday.

The Bulldogs' Thomas Hursey placed tied for 23rd with a 145 figure on rounds of 75 Saturday and 70 on Sunday while Jason Martinus finished in a share of 67th place overall at 151. Martinus posted a 79 in round one and lowered his score by seven strokes in the final round when he came in with a 72.

Finally, Andrew Proctor wound up tied for 74th in the field at 152 for the tournament with a 75 over the first 18 holes followed by a 77 in the final round.

FSU senior golfer Seth Terpstra competed as an individual and placed tied for 23rd at 146 overall on rounds of 74 and 71 Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Bulldogs will next compete in the Findlay Spring Invitational, which is slated to be held March 25-26 in Lexington, Ky.
