Ferris State Men's Golf Team Three Strokes Off Lead In Second At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad had a strong showing in the opening round of the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Friday (April 19) as the Bulldogs are currently second overall in the event.

Ferris State shot a 298 team figure in the opening round at Bedford Valley Country Club and the Bulldogs are only three strokes off the lead heading into the second round. Ashland shot a 295 to take the day one lead with FSU's 298 figure four strokes in front of third-place Grand Valley State among the 11 competing schools.

The Bulldogs were led by senior Andrew Hammett, who shot a one-under par 71 and is currently part of a five-way tie for first place overall.

FSU senior Jack Weller carded a 75 in round one and is tied for 12th overall for FSU.

Finally, the trio of seniors Seth Terpstra and Ryan Bayer along with Thomas Hursey all shot a 76 in the first round and each is tied for 14th in the field.

The event is being held this year in Augusta, Mich., with action at the Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort near Battle Creek.

Action continues with second-round play starting on Saturday at 11 a.m. (ET).

The 2019 GLIAC Championships feature a new format with each league school competing in 36 holes of stroke play with a single round per day on both Friday and Saturday. The low four of five scores will count towards the respective team score for each squad.

Following round two, the top four teams will advance to head-to-head medal play on Sunday with a bracket format similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships. The two winning teams following semifinal-round play will advance to the finals in which a GLIAC Champion will be crowned.
