Ferris State Men's Golf Sits 8th After First Round At D2 Super Regional Championships
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad opened action in the 2019 NCAA Division II Super Regional Championships by carding a 299 team figure on Thursday (May 9) in the opening round in Hot Springs, Ark.
The Bulldogs finished at +11 for the first 18 holes of action and sit eighth overall in the 20-team field on the par 72 Arlington course at the Hot Springs Country Club that measures 6,713 yards.
FSU is currently only a single shot out of sixth place overall heading into the final 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The top six teams at the end of the event will advance to the D2 National Championships.
Due to impending weekend weather, the final two rounds of the Midwest/Central Super Regional will both be played on Friday (May 10) beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET) as the event has been shortened from three days to two days.
Presently, Missouri-St. Louis holds the first day lead at 287 followed by Lindenwood (290), host Henderson State (293) along with Trevecca Nazarene (296) and Indianapolis (296) in the top five overall. A total of only four strokes seperate the fourth thru 10th place teams in the field.
Senior Andrew Hammett led the Bulldogs in round one as he is currently tied for first place overall on the individual leaderboard after shooting a three-under par 69 on Thursday.
FSU senior Jack Weller shot a 75 and is tied for 29th place with fellow senior Seth Terpstra in a share of 54th place with a 77 score.
The Bulldogs' Andrew Proctor came in with a 78 and is tied for 69th place in the field while Thomas Hursey notched an 80 and is currently tied for 87th overall.
The Super Regional Championships consist of 10 teams from the Midwest Region along with 10 from the Central Region. Four individuals from each region are also competing in the 54-hole tournament.
At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two individuals not affiliated with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2019 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
For the 2019 championships, the Midwest/Central Super Regional will be allocated six berths into the D2 National Championships.
Along with number four seed Ferris State, those teams from the Midwest Region who ar emaking the super regional tourney appearance are top-seeded Indianapolis, Grand Valley State, Missouri-St. Louis, FSU, Trevecca Nazarene, Findlay, Wayne State, Hillsdale, Bellarmine and Maryville (Mo.) in respective seeding order.
Host Henderson State is the Central Region's top seed and followed by Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, Lindenwood (Mo.), Washburn (Kan.), Southeastern Oklahoma State, Central Missouri, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Northeastern State (Okla.) and Winona State (Minn.).
Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs captured their 20th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship as they beat rival Grand Valley State in head-to-head semifinal action before topping Ashland in the finals.
Two years ago, in 2017, the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the 2017 NCAA-II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Kearney, Neb., before going on to a national quarterfinal finish under head coach Kyle Wittenbach. It was the Bulldogs' 15th appearance at the national championships in school history.
Last year, current FSU senior golfer Andrew Hammett was an individual qualifer for the NCAA Super Regional Championships, which makes this the 17th-straight year in which the Bulldogs have had representation in the NCAA Tournament. The 17-year streak of NCAA Championship representation in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
