Ferris State Men's Golf Wraps Up Day One Action At NCAA Division II National Championships
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad opened action in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships by notching a 312 team score on Monday (May 20) at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.
The Bulldogs finished the opening 18 holes of the 54-hole event at +24 overall and currently rank 20th overall heading into day two of three action on Tuesday on the par 72 course.
Senior Jack Weller paced the Bulldogs with a 75 in round one and is currently tied for 52nd overall.
Meanwhile, fellow seniors Seth Terpstra and Andrew Hammett along with freshman Thomas Hursey all posted round of 79 and are midst a tie for 91st place individually.
Finally, FSU's Andrew Proctor shot a 87 and is tied for 107th in the field.
Ferris State will hit the course early on Tuesday for round two starting at 8:25 a.m. (ET) with the squad's first player hitting the tee.
The Bulldogs are making their 16th all-time national championships appearance and second berth in three years after placing third overall at the 2019 NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional last week in Hot Springs, Ark.
Ferris State is one of 20 teams from across the country competing in the national championships and among two qualifiers from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The finals are being hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
At the National Championships, all 20 advancing teams and eight individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of stroke play, an individual champion will be declared along with finishers 2-10 based on cumulative total score and any applicable tiebreakers. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play will be placed into a bracket and seeded based on 54-hole scores for the medal/match play portion of the competition to determine the team champion.
The 54-hole stroke play portion of the event runs thru Wednesday with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Medal/Match competition for those advancing teams taking place on Thursday. The final round of the team competition takes place on Friday.
Two years ago, in 2017, the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the 2017 NCAA-II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Kearney, Neb., before going on to a national quarterfinal finish under head coach Kyle Wittenbach.
Last year, current FSU senior golfer Andrew Hammett was an individual qualifer for the NCAA Super Regional Championships, which makes this the 17th-straight year in which the Bulldogs have had representation in the NCAA Tournament. The 17-year streak of NCAA Championship representation in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
