FSU Men's Golf Closes Action At 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad concluded action Wednesday (May 21) in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships as the Bulldogs played final round action at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.

The Bulldogs totaled a 918 team score for the tournament to finish at +54 in 20th place overall at the D2 National Championships following a final-round 312 showing on Wednesday. FSU opened the 54-hole event on the par 72 course with a 312 on Monday before carding a 294 in Tuesday's middle round.

Individually, Bulldog senior Jack Weller finished tied for 21st for the Bulldogs with a 217 total. Following his first round 75 score, he came back with a 69 on Tuesday and wrapped up the three-day event with a 73 in the final round.

FSU senior Seth Terpstra totaled a 232 figure for the three rounds and placed 91st in the field. Terpstra shot a 79 in round one and a 74 in round two before recording another 79 in the final round.

A third Ferris State senior, Andrew Hammett, also shot a 79 in the final round on Wednesday and wound up tied for 92nd overall at 233 for the championships. He had posted a 79 in the opening round and fired a 75 in Tuesday's second round.

Freshman Thomas Hursey finished tied for 97th at 236 for the event following a final-round 81 figure, which came on the heels of a 79 in round one followed by a 76 in round two.

Finally, Andrew Proctor registered a 90 in the final 18 holes to place 107th overall at 259 for the tournament. Proctor shot a 87 in the first round and a 82 in round two.

The Bulldogs made their 16th all-time national championships appearance and second berth in three years after placing third overall at the 2019 NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional last week in Hot Springs, Ark.

Ferris State was one of 20 teams from across the country competing in the national championships and among two qualifiers from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The finals were hosted by the Mountain East Conference.

At the National Championships, all 20 advancing teams and eight individuals completed 54 holes of stroke play. Following the 54 holes of stroke play, the top eight teams advanced into a bracket for the medal/match play portion of the competition to determine the team champion.

Two years ago, in 2017, the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the 2017 NCAA-II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Kearney, Neb., before going on to a national quarterfinal finish under head coach Kyle Wittenbach.

Last year, current FSU senior golfer Andrew Hammett was an individual qualifer for the NCAA Super Regional Championships, which makes this the 17th-straight year in which the Bulldogs have had representation in the NCAA Tournament. The 17-year streak of NCAA Championship representation in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
