Hursey Wins Medalist Honors As Ferris State Registers Strong Third-Place Finish At The Cav Classic

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team completed a strong performance by finishing third overall as play wrapped up at The Cav Classic on Tuesday (April 5) in Canton, Ohio.

The Bulldogs shot a three-round 878 team score, finishing +14 overall for the 54 holes of action, and finished only 11 shots out of first place. Host Walsh won the event at the Glenmoor Country Club, carding a 867 figure with Malone only a stroke in front of FSU at 877 overall.

The par 72 course measured 6,854 yards and the two-day event featured a total of 12 teams.

Individually, Ferris State had the event's individual medalist as Thomas Hursey shot an 8-under score of 208 to win the event by six strokes. He carded a 71 in round one followed by a 69 in round two and a four-under 68 in the final round to garner the victory.

The Bulldogs' Nathan Kraynyk also placed among the top six finishers, coming in sixth overall with a 219 score for the three rounds. He shot a 77 in round one before firing an even-par 72 in round two and a two-under 70 in the final round.

FSU's Joshua Jeffords placed tied for 15th in the field at 225 for the tournament, notching a 77 in the opening round before posting scores of 73 in round two and 75 in round three.

Meanwhile, Andrew Proctor was only two shots behind Jeffords, finishing tied for 22nd overall with a 227 total. Proctor finished the event with a 77 in the final round after shooting 74 in the opening 18 holes followed by 76 in the middle round.

Ferris State's Zach Koerner rounded out the Bulldog lineup in a share of 24th place as he totaled 229 for the two days of competition. Koerner posted a 77 in round one and then came back with identical 76 scores in each of the final two rounds.

The Bulldogs also had a pair of golfers compete individually with Jason Martinus tying for 30th and Zach Gildner placing tied for 32nd overall. Martinus finished with a 233 total and Gildner wound up at 235 overall.

Martinus opened the event with back-to-back 77 scores on Monday in the first two rounds and closed with a 79 on Tuesday. Gildner shot an 85 in the first round, but came back with a two-over par 74 in round two and a 76 in the final round.

The Bulldogs will next compete in the Bill Blazer Memorial on April 11-12 in Urbana, Ohio.
