Bulldog Men's Golf Sits Second After Round One At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team put together a strong performance on Friday (April 12) as round one play took place at the 2024 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs shot a first-round 290 team figure and are currently second overall behind leader Grand Valley State (282) at the top of the conference leaderboard. The Lakers finished two-under in Friday's first round with FSU second at six-over par.

Behind GVSU and FSU was Parkside in third place (297) with Wayne State fourth (300) and Saginaw Valley State fifth (301) in the nine-team field.

Ferris State was led in the opening round by Sam Havey, who shot an even-par 71 and is tied for third in the field following the initial 18 holes of play. FSU's McCoy Biagioli was next in the Bulldog lineup, carding a 72 for a share of fifth place individually.

The Bulldogs' Zach Koerner notched a 73 and is tied for ninth on the leaderboard while both Caleb Bond and Nathan Kraynyk shot scores of 74 and are tied for 14th in the field.

The event is being held again this year in Augusta, Mich., with action at the Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort near Battle Creek.

The 2024 GLIAC Championships are continuing the format established four years ago with each league school competing in 36 holes of stroke play with a single round per day on both Friday and Saturday. The low four of five scores will count towards the respective team score for each squad.

Following round two, the top four teams will advance to head-to-head medal play on Sunday with a bracket format similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships. The two winning teams following semifinal-round play will advance to the finals in which a GLIAC Champion will be crowned.

Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort has become one of the largest golf resorts in the World, featuring six championship courses in one amazing destination. Golfers can play 18 holes a day for six days, without ever playing the same hole twice.

The men teed off on Friday at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club course. The par 71 course measured at 6,742 yards.

Overall, the Bulldog men's golf squad has captured 21 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history and won back-to-back medal match play league titles in 2019 and 2021 (no tournament was held in 2020) before earning runner-up honors in 2022. FSU reached the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year a season ago.
