Bulldog Hockey Shutout At Canisius In Weekend Series Finale

The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss to Canisius this Saturday (Oct. 10) night as the Golden Griffins tallied an early third-period goal for the contest's lone score in the non-league series finale between the two teams at the Buffalo (N.Y.) State Sports Arena. 

The game-winning lamplighter would come early in the third period of play as Ryan Klusendorf netted the lone marker just 37 seconds into the frame to snap a scoreless tie.

Ferris State applied offensive pressure throughout the game as the Bulldogs recorded a 48-to-21 shot on goal advantage.  FSU posted a 16-7 lead in shots after the opening 20 minutes and then followed with a 15-8 lead in the second period.  The Bulldogs would go on to post a 17-6 advantage for the final period.  Junior defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City) led the Ferris with nine shots on net while sophomore defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) and senior right wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia) registered five shots apiece. 

In power plays, Ferris State was unsuccessful in seven opportunities while Canisius went zero-for-six.

Senior goaltender Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) started for FSU and turned away 20 shots on goal, including eight second-period stops, in 58:40 minutes of action between the posts.  His counterpart, Dan Morrison of Canisius earned the win with a 48-save performance in picking up the shutout victory. 

The series finale was a physical one as both teams combined for 131 minutes in penalties with Ferris State being assessed 17 penalties for 72 minutes. 

Ferris State will now get set for its season home opener this weekend (Oct. 16-17) versus the Connecticut Huskies at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.  Opening faceoff for this Friday's (Oct. 17) series opener is 7:05 p.m. (EDT) while Saturday's rematch will commence at 5:05 p.m. (EDT).  Tickets can be purchased by calling the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888 or StarTickets at (800) 585-3737. NOTES: Pat Nagle is now within 50 saves of compiling 1,000 career stops in his career after totaling 20 saves in tonight's contest.  Nagle would be the 15th netminder in Bulldog hockey history to attain the milestone. . . .Ferris State was whistled 17 times for a season-high 72 penalty minutes, which included 10 penalties for 47 minutes in the third period. . . Sophomoer defenseman Brett Wysopal and junior left wing Justin Menke received game disqualifications and will be required to sit out the Bulldogs' next game which is this Friday (Oct. 16) against Connecticut.  Wysopal, a Colorado College transfer, received his in the second period while Menke's DQ occurred at the end of the contest. . . Ferris State finished the two-game set outshooting the Griffins by a 92-to-45 margin.
