#20 Ferris State Sweeps Bowling Green With 3-1 Series Finale Win

The nationally 20th-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team completed a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) weekend series sweep of Bowling Green State this Saturday (Jan. 8) with a 3-1 victory over the Falcons at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Ferris State, which improves to 11-8-4 overall and 8-6-3-2 in the CCHA this season with the win, has accumulated 29 league points to date. The Bulldogs resumed CCHA play on Friday (Jan. 7) by claiming a 4-1 decision over Bowling Green State.
The teams exchanged scores in the opening 20 minutes of play with the Falcons striking first on a goal at 6:22 into the contest. Bowling Green converted on a FSU turnover in the Bulldogs' zone as Bryce Williamson fired a wrister from high between the circles to senior goaltender Pat Nagle's (Bloomfield) glove side. The Falcons would enjoy their lead for a little over four minutes before Ferris State knotted the game up at 1-1 on an even-strength goal by senior defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City). The Bulldog captain scored unassisted for his sixth of the year on a four-on-four situation by carrying the puck the length of the ice. Redmond skated down the right side into the BGSU zone before putting a shot on Falcons' goaltender Andrew Hammond near the right corner of the crease and the puck deflected off Hammond, but was accidentally knocked in by BGSU defenseman Jake Sloat. The Bulldogs would claim a decisive 14-3 lead in shots for the first period.
The score remained deadlocked at one apiece until 4:39 remaining in the contest when sophomore center Travis Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) put Ferris State ahead 2-1 on his second goal of the season. Ouellette, the game's second star, connected on a one timer from near the inside of the right circle as the puck went five-hole through Andrew Hammond's pads. Freshman right wing Justin DeMartino (Macomb) picked up a loose puck off the skate of junior left wing Mike Fillinger (Grand Ledge) in the neutral zone and fed the puck over to Ouellette for the eventual game winner.
The Bulldogs would add an insurance goal with two seconds left on junior center Jordie Johnston's (Rosetown, Saskatchewan) empty-net tally. Johnson, who hit the post at an empty BGSU net with 18 seconds to go, posted his fourth of the season with a shot from inside the right circle into the far corner of the Falcons' goal. Sophomore right wing Matthew Kirzinger (Leroy, Saskatchewan) and senior left wing Mike Embach (Orland Park, Ill.) each picked up a helper on the goal with Kirzinger feeding a pass up the ice through the neutral zone along the right side to a streaking Johnston.
Ferris State generated 25 shots on goal for the game to Bowling Green's 17 total, which featured a 21-12 advantage through two periods.
The game's first star went to Pat Nagle, who improved to 11-6-4 on the season by turning aside 16 shots on net. Andrew Hammond made 22 stops in absorbing the loss for the Falcons. Bowling Green State is now 7-15-2 overall and 2-12-2-0 in the league.
Ferris State will face the nationally-ranked Michigan Wolverines next weekend, Jan. 14-15, in a home-and-home CCHA weekend series. The Bulldogs visit Michigan in Friday's (Jan. 14) series opener at UM's Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. Opening faceoff is at 7:35 p.m. (EST) in a contest to be televised live on the CBS College Sports Network. Ferris State then hosts the Wolverines in Saturday's (Jan. 15 ) rematch at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The series finale, which will be aired live by Comcast Television, commences at 7:05 p.m. (EST). Notes: Ferris State is unbeaten in its last three outings (2-0-1) . . . The last time FSU swept BGSU on its ice was in the 2002-03 season (March 7-8) with 4-2 and 4-3 victories . . . The Bulldogs improved to 12-8-2 in in their first two CCHA-opening contests of a new year since the 2000-01 campaign . . . Zach Redmond tallied a career season-best tying sixth goal of the season with Ferris' first lamplighter of the contest. Redmond scored six goals apiece both in the 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons.
