Nelson Named Gongshow Goalie of the Month

Big Rapids, Mich.- The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) announced today (April 16) that Ferris State University senior goaltender Taylor Nelson has been named the March/April Gongshow Goaltender of the Month after leading the Bulldogs on a historic NCAA Tournament run.

The 6-1, 177-pound goalie from Regina, Saskatchewan, started in seven contests in the two month stretch. With four victories, Nelson had a 2.33 goals against average and held a .917 save percentage.

Highlighting the playoff run was a 1.00 goals against average and a .959 save percentage in the NCAA Regional Tournament (March 23-24) as Nelson faced a combined 49 shots from Cornell and Denver in identical 2-1 victories.

Nelson was in net as the Bulldogs made their first-ever appearance in the Frozen Four last week (April 5-7) in Tampa, Fla. The Bulldogs recorded a 3-1 win over Union before falling against Boston College in the national championship game by a 4-1 score. Nelson faced 64 shots and made 60 saves in the Frozen Four.

This is the first time the All-American and CCHA First Team goalie has earned the monthly league honor in his career.

Besides Nelson's award, special mention for RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month honors went to Ferris State junior forward Matthew Kirzinger.  Meanwhile, special mention for CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Month honors was awarded to Ferris State defenseman Jason Binkley among others.
