Voice Of FSU Hockey Dominic Hennig Joins Flint Firebirds As Broadcasting & Communications Director

Flint, Mich. - The Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Flint Firebirds have officially named Dominic Hennig, who has served the past six years as the voice of Ferris State Hockey, as the organization's Director of Broadcasting and Communications. Hennig will serve as the radio, streaming and pay-per-view voice for the Firebirds in their inaugural season in the OHL.

Hennig heads to Flint with eight years of hockey broadcasting experience. Most recently, Hennig was the radio and television play-by-play broadcaster for Ferris State's NCAA Division I hockey program. In addition, he served as the university's Athletics Communications Associate and played a key role in broadcast, communications and multimedia initiatives for Ferris State Athletics.

During his tenure at Ferris State, Hennig broadcasted two conference regular season titles in both the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).  Hennig called Ferris State's run to the NCAA National Championship game in 2012, giving him the opportunity to announce at the pinnacle of college hockey.

"Dominic will be a hard person to replace and we'll certainly miss his enthusiasm, outstanding skills and most importantly his friendship and passion for Ferris State," said Rob Bentley, FSU Assistant Athletics Director for Communications. "He made a tremendous impact in a variety of areas over his six years with the Bulldogs and I know he'll do an outstanding job at the professional level in Flint as he pursues his goal of eventually broadcasting in the National Hockey League."

In addition to broadcasting for Ferris State, Hennig can frequently be heard on Sirius XM's NHL Network as the College Hockey Insider and was also the host and founder of "The Breakaway," a weekly call-in hockey talk radio show throughout West Michigan this past year on local flagship station Sunny 97.3 FM.

"We are very excited to have Dominic join our hockey and front office team," said Costa Papista, the president of the Flint Firebirds. "He has impressive credentials and a tremendous amount of passion and enthusiasm for our community-minded hockey project here in Flint and Genesee County."

Hennig played an integral role in the strategic marketing of Bulldog Hockey and Ferris State Athletics. He was a key member of a team that increased attendance for six consecutive seasons, leading to the expansion of the "Dawg Pound" student section after a 150% surge in season ticket sales in three years. Hennig also played a lead role in helping develop a social media presence for Ferris State that has been consistently presented as a model by the NCAA and which has received acclaim nationally.

"I want to thank Rolf (Nilsen) and Costa (Papista) for giving me the opportunity to become the Flint Firebirds radio broadcaster," said Hennig. "I couldn't be more excited to get started and cannot wait to become involved in the Flint and Genesee County community."

Hennig is a native of Macomb, Mich., and a graduate of Ferris State University. He holds a bachelor's of science degree in business and public relations along with a minor in sports communications. Currently, Hennig is working towards a master's of business administration (MBA).

A nationwide search to fill Ferris State's vacant Athletics Communications Associate position and the Bulldog Hockey play-by-play role is currently underway.
