Marquette, Mich. — After a late goal from junior forward Gerald Mayhew forced overtime, Northern Michigan's Dominik Shine scored the winning goal for the Northern Michigan Wildcats (6-6-6, 5-5-5 WCHA) 42 seconds into the extra frame to defeat the Ferris State Bulldogs (8-8-4, 7-7-2 WCHA) 3-2 on Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.
Mayhew had both goals for Ferris State in the defeat, while freshman goaltender Darren Smith got the start and made 27 saves.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, as the Bulldogs outshot Northern Michigan 8-4 in the opening frame despite taking three minor penalties.
At 8:35 of the second, Mayhew scored FSU's first shorthanded goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. An unassisted goal, Mayhew caused a turnover in the offensive zone and found the puck in between the circles before beating NMU netminder Mathias Israelsson with a glove side wrist shot.
But Robbie Payne responded for Northern Michigan by scoring twice, once at the end of the second and a second time 1:43 into the third period, to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
With their backs against the ropes, it was Mayhew who evened the game for the Bulldogs on a deflection in front with just 2:39 left in the third. The initial shot was taken by junior defenseman Ryan Lowney, who was credited with his seventh assist of the season and his second helper in as many games on the weekend.
Shine's OT strike came off a face-off in the FSU zone with assists to forwards Gerard Hanson and Darren Nowick.
FSU outshot NMU 31-30 on the night. Israelsson made 29 saves to pick up the win for the Wildcats in his first collegiate game. Both teams finished the night 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Ferris State is off for 19 days to close out the fall semester and will be back in action on Jan. 1 against Harvard in the Mariucci Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. The puck is scheduled to drop at 5 p.m. for the opening game of the tournament.
