Ferris State Hockey Wins For Second Time In Last Three Games On Road In WCHA Play

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up its second road victory in the last three contests as the Bulldogs closed the weekend with a 3-1 triumph over the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday (Nov. 5) night at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.

FSU grabbed the early lead and scored once in each period of the series' finale to notch the victory. Freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster also picked up his second win in as many starts in net for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State jumped in front early as freshman forward Taylor Fernandez tallied his second goal of the season only 6:26 into the first period. His power play goal was assisted by fellow freshmen Nate Kallen and Joe Rutkowski as FSU grabbed an early 1-0 edge.

The score stood until almost midway thru the second period when BGSU tied the game up with an even-strength marker from Lukas Craggs at 8:52 of the middle frame. Both John Schilling and Adam Smith were credited with assists as the Falcons tallied their only goal of the evening.

Following the Bowling Green score, the Bulldogs answered with forward Andrew Dorantes notching his second goal this season at 12:11 of the second, giving FSU the lead again at 2-1 in the contest. Sophomore forward Corey Mackin and freshman defenseman Cameron Clarke picked up assists on the eventual game-winning goal.

Ferris State then added a short-handed goal from senior forward Gerald Mayhew only 3:21 into the final period to account for the final margin. Mayhew recorded his fifth goal this season with fellow senior forward Jared VanWormer picking up the assist for his first point of the night.

Kapelmaster improved to 2-0-0 in net this season as he made 26 saves between the pipes for the Bulldogs, including 10 in the first period along with 10 more in the second and six in the third.

On the BGSU side, Chris Nell suffered the setback despite stopping 22 FSU shots in 56:08 of action.

The host Falcons held a narrow 27-25 edge in total shots for the night with one additional shot in both the first and third frames. Each team netted a contest-best 11 shots in the middle period.

Finally, each team received eight power play opportunities with FSU going one-of-eight and BGSU being held scoreless on the man-advantage. Ferris State was called for nine penalties totaling 18 minutes in the box and the Falcons had seven infractions for 17 minutes.

Ferris State will play a non-conference home-and-home series against the Michigan State Spartans this coming week. FSU visits MSU for a 7:05 p.m. (ET) puck drop on Thursday (Nov. 10) night at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing to open the in-state series.
