Ferris State Hockey Drops Non-League Decision To Michigan State Before Sellout Crowd

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 in non-conference action against the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday (Nov. 12) before a sellout crowd of 2,490 fans inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Senior forwards Gerald Mayhew and Jared VanWormer each netted goals for Ferris State while several Bulldogs continued point scoring streaks, including senior defenseman Ryan Lowney, freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski and sophomore forward Corey Mackin.

The Spartans struck at 1:27 of the first period when Sam Saliba netted a rebound chance from Logan Lambdin and Villiam Haag to give the Spartans an early 1-0 edge.

Ferris State responded with three-straight goals to end the first. Junior forward Andrew Mayer scored his second of the year at 4:04 of the first from Craig Pefley and Lowney. It was Pefley's 10th assist of the year and Lowney's seventh.

Mayhew made an individual effort, charging down the wall to the net, beating MSU goaltender Ed Minney cleanly for his seventh of the year. Freshman forward Jason Tackett earned his third assist of the year while Rutkowski added his sixth.

VanWormer scored while wide open in front through the legs of Minney for his second of the year after Mackin dug a puck out of the corner and fed it in front for the Bulldog captain. Junior forward Andrew Dorantes earned his third assist of the year as well to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

MSU scored three-straight goals of their own to take the contest. Mason Appleton scored on the power play from Taro Hirose and Zach Osburn at 4:18 of the second before Joe Cox scored to tie the game at 9:02 of the third from Thomas Ebbing.

Appleton scored his second of the night to give the Spartans the lead at 10:23 of the third period. 
MSU outshot Ferris State 25-23 for the evening and the Bulldogs failed to score on the power play for the first time in seven outings.

Ferris State returns to action on Friday, Nov. 18, against the Lake Superior State Lakers at 7:07 p.m. (ET) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.
