Ferris State Drops One-Goal Game In Three Rivers Classic Opener

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 1-0 to the Robert Morris Colonials in the Three Rivers Classic Tournament semifinals as the Bulldogs began the second half of the year on Thursday (Dec. 29) at the PPG Paints Arena.


Sophomore goaltender Darren Smith shined again with 35 saves and the Bulldogs outshot the Colonials 14-7 in the final frame.

The Colonials netted the only goal on a Ferris State turnover to Brady Ferguson of RMU. Ferguson fed a pass across the crease to Daniel Leavens, who banked one off of the stick of a diving Smith and in at 4:01 of the second period.

Ferris State put a late flurry on, but was unable to beat Francis Marotte who finished with a 32 save shutout in the victory for Robert Morris.

The Bulldogs went 0-1 on the power play, while the Colonials finished 0-3 with the man-advantage for the evening. 

Ferris State will next play the Boston College Eagles where the two programs will meet for the first time since the 2012 National Championship game. This will be the fourth meeting in program history between the two schools with the Bulldogs searching for their first victory in the series.

Puck drop is set for Friday (Dec. 30) at 4:30 p.m. (ET) etween the Bulldogs and the Eagles in the Three Rivers Classic at Pittsburgh.
