Ferris State Earns Shootout Victory In Alaska Following Overtime Deadlock With Seawolves

Anchorage, Alaska - A total of 65 minutes of hockey wasn't enough to decide the Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad's deadlock against the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday (Jan. 7) as the two teams battled to a 2-2 overtime tie before the Bulldogs won the shootout to gain two points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings.

Freshman forward Cameron Clarke netted his first collegiate goal in the game and added an assist in the stretch of less than 10 minutes for FSU. Freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 22 saves on 24 shots in the contest as well.

The Seawolves started the scoring at 6:54 of the first period when Mason Mitchell let go a quick shot to put UAA up by a 1-0 score. Matt Anholt and Jarrett Brown earned assists on Mitchell's fifth tally of the year.

Clarke got the Bulldogs on the board at 5:58 of the second frame, firing a shot underneath UAA goaltender Olivier Mantha from a sharp angle. Junior forward Zach Szajner earned his first point of the year on an assist while fellow junior forward Andrew Mayer notched his second helper of the year.

Ferris State took a 2-1 lead at 16:13 of the second period when sophomore forward Corey Mackin chipped a shot past Mantha from the top of the blue paint for his eighth goal of the season. Junior forward Mitch Maloney grabbed his sixth assist of the year on the centering pass from behind the net and Clarke earned his second point of the period along with his fifth assist of the year by finding Maloney behind the net.

Alaska Anchorage tied the game at 14:18 of the third on the power play when Jeremiah Luedtke scored his first of the year from Nathan Renouf and Jarrett Brown.

The Seawolves carried the play in the first overtime stanza, outshooting the Bulldogs 6-1 in the extra frame, but couldn't beat Kapelmaster as the game was officially marked as a tie for NCAA purposes.

In the following three-on-three overtime, Ferris State carried the pace, outshooting Alaska Anchorage 5-2, but Mantha made key stops to keep the puck out and send it to a shootout.

Ferris State senior forward Gerald Mayhew and UAA's Luedtke traded goals to open the shootout, but Renouf missed in round two for the Seawolves. Freshman forward Jason Tackett then netted the shootout winner to earn Ferris State two points in the WCHA Standings.

The Bulldogs outshot the Seawolves 28-24 for the game despite taking eight penalties for 16 minutes. Alaska Anchorage took four penalties for eight minutes in the game and Ferris State went 0-of-3 on the man advantage with UAA finishing 1-of-7 in that regard.

Ferris State will return home to face the other league member from Alaska, the University of Alaska Nanooks next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14. Both puck drops are scheduled for 7:07 p.m. (ET) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.
