Ferris State Skates To Official Overtime Tie With Alaska In First Home Action Of 2017

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks on Friday (Jan. 13) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena before falling in the three-on-three overtime period in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Senior forwards Gerald Mayhew and Chad McDonald each had a goal and an assist for two points apiece while freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 47 saves.

Mayhew got the Bulldogs on the board first at 10:20 of the first period, slamming in a rebound given up by UAF goaltender Davis Jones for his 11th goal of the year. Senior forward Jared VanWormer and sophomore forward Corey Mackin each earned their eighth assist of the year on Mayhew's goal.

Colton Leiter tied it for Alaska shortly after at 13:30 of the first, batting a bouncing puck out of the air past Kapelmaster to tie the game at 1-1 overall. Justin Woods was credited with the assist.

The Nanooks took their only lead of the game at 7:30 of the second when Brandon Morley scored from Austin Vieth.

McDonald pulled the Bulldogs even at 2-2 when he ripped a long wrist shot off the post and in at 11:43 of the second period on the power play. Mayhew and senior defenseman Ryan Lowney earned assists on the goal.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead at 18:22 of the second when junior forward Andrew Dorantes was left wide open in front of the net and freshman defenseman Nate Kallen hit him with a pass from behind the net. McDonald registered his assist on the evening on this goal as well for his fifth of the year.

UAF's Troy Van Tetering deflected a long shot out of the air and past Kapelmaster to tie the game at 1:38 of the third on the power play. Marcus Basara and Nick Hinz earned assists on Van Tetering's power play tally.

The Nanooks and Bulldogs finished knotted at 3-3 through the NCAA's official 65-minute game, as the game officially goes down as a tie. Austin Vieth scored the three-on-three winning goal for UAF to earn them the extra point in the WCHA Standings.

No penalties were called in the opening period, but Ferris State finished 1-of-4 overall on the power play, with Alaska going 1-of-3 on the night.
